Why is my dryer not heating?
If the drum turns but your clothes come out cold or barely warm, the heat source or one of its safety parts has failed. Gas and electric dryers fail in different places.
-
Burnt-Out Heating Element
Electric dryers heat air with a coiled element behind the drum. Over time the coil can break, and the dryer keeps tumbling with no heat. We test the element and replace it if it has opened.
-
Failed Gas Igniter or Valve Coils
In a gas dryer, the igniter glows to light the burner and the valve coils let the gas through. If the igniter never glows, or glows and then goes out with no flame, one of these parts has failed. We test both and replace the faulty one.
-
Blown Thermal Fuse
The thermal fuse cuts the heat, or the whole dryer, when it overheats. A blown fuse is usually a sign of a blocked vent, not just a bad part. We replace it and find out why it blew so it doesn't happen again.
Quick check: for an electric dryer, look at the breaker panel. Most electric dryers use a double breaker, and if one half trips, the drum can still turn while the heat stays off.
