Why is my refrigerator making noise?
A soft hum and the odd click are normal. Grinding, squealing, rattling or a buzz that never seems to stop usually comes from one of these three parts.
-
Failed Evaporator Fan Motor
A squeal or chirp inside the freezer that gets louder when you open the door often means the fan bearings are wearing out. Once the fan stops, the fridge section warms up. We replace the motor and check the blade for ice damage.
-
Dirty Condenser Coils and Fan
Dust and pet hair on the coils make the compressor run longer and the condenser fan work harder, which you hear as a steady hum or rattle. We clean the coils, test the fan and make sure air moves freely around the unit.
-
Worn Compressor Mounts
A rattle from the bottom back of the fridge every time it starts can come from hardened rubber mounts or a refrigerant line touching the cabinet. We replace the mounts and secure the tubing so it stops vibrating.
Quick check: pull the fridge out a few centimetres so it isn't touching the wall or cabinets, and check that it sits level. Both cause rattles that have nothing to do with a broken part.
