Washer Trouble? Find the Cause and Book a Kirkland Technician

Most washer breakdowns fall into four groups. Find the one that matches yours to see the usual causes and what our technician checks first. If there's water on the floor, turn off the taps behind the machine before anything else.

Why won't my washer drain?

If the cycle ends with water still in the drum, or the washer stops before the spin, the water has nowhere to go. One of these three is almost always the reason.

  • Clogged Drain Pump Filter

Coins, hair ties and lint collect in the filter behind the small panel at the bottom front of most front-loaders. Once it fills up, water can't reach the pump. We clean the filter and check the pump housing for anything that slipped past it.

  • Failed Drain Pump

If you hear a hum but no water moves, or the washer goes silent at drain time, the pump motor may have burned out or its impeller may be broken. We test the pump and replace it if it has failed.

  • Kinked or Blocked Drain Hose

A hose pushed too far against the wall can fold flat, and lint builds up where it enters the standpipe. We straighten or replace the hose and clear the line so water flows freely.

Quick check: make sure the drain hose behind the washer isn't kinked or squashed. On a front-loader, put a towel and a shallow tray under the filter panel before opening it, since a full drum can release several litres of water.

Why is my washer leaking?

Where the water shows up says a lot. A puddle at the front usually points to the door, while water at the back or underneath points to the hoses or the tub.

  • Torn Door Boot Seal

The rubber boot around a front-loader door can tear from zippers, coins or plain age, and mould can crack it too. Water then escapes under the door during the wash. We replace the boot and check that the door closes evenly.

  • Loose or Cracked Inlet Hose

The hot and cold hoses at the back are under constant water pressure. A loose fitting or a hose that has cracked with age can drip slowly or burst. We tighten or replace them and can fit braided steel hoses that hold up better over time.

  • Worn Tub Seal

Water dripping from underneath, often with a grinding noise on spin, can mean the seal between the tub and the drum shaft has failed. That usually affects the bearings too, so we inspect both and give you an honest repair-or-replace opinion.

Quick check: turn off the taps behind the washer whenever you're away for more than a day. It's the simplest way to stop a burst hose from flooding the laundry room.

Why does my washer shake or bang during spin?

Some movement during a fast spin is normal. Loud banging, a washer that walks across the floor or a roar that gets worse every week is not.

  • Worn Shock Absorbers

Front-loaders use shock absorbers to steady the drum. When they wear out, the drum knocks against the cabinet at high speed. We replace them as a set so the drum stays balanced.

  • Broken Suspension Springs

Springs hold the tub from the top. A broken or stretched spring lets the tub sag to one side and bang during spin. We replace the springs and check the shock absorbers at the same visit.

  • Failing Drum Bearings

A roar or rumble that grows louder at high speed is the classic sign of worn bearings. Catching it early can save the tub. We confirm the diagnosis and quote the repair before any work starts.

Quick check: spread heavy items like towels and bedding evenly, and make sure all four feet touch the floor with no rocking. An unbalanced load or an uneven floor causes most occasional banging.

Why won't my washer start or unlock?

A washer that stays silent, beeps at you or keeps your clothes locked inside usually has a door or control problem, not a dead motor.

  • Faulty Door Lock Assembly

Front-loaders won't start until the door lock confirms it's shut, and won't open until it releases. A failed lock blocks both. We replace the assembly and test it through a full cycle.

  • Failed Lid Switch

Top-loaders use a lid switch to confirm the lid is closed before they agitate or spin. When it breaks, the washer fills but won't move, or won't start at all. We replace the switch and check the wiring to it.

  • Control Board Error

Error codes, frozen buttons or a blank display can point to the main control board. We read the code and run the service test first, so the board only gets replaced when it's really the cause.

Before you call: unplug the washer for one minute to reset it and check that the child lock isn't on. If the door is locked with water inside, don't force it open.

Not sure which one matches your washer? Call and describe what it's doing, or read us the error code from the display. We'll book a technician and tell you what to have ready, like the model number from the sticker inside the door opening.

Washer Brands We Fix in Kirkland Homes

We repair washers from the brands below, from LG and Samsung front-loaders with steam cycles and smart controls to Whirlpool and Maytag top-loaders that have run for years and compact Bosch and Miele machines in condo laundry closets. Each brand has its own weak spots, and our technicians know where to look first.

Some washers, especially newer direct-drive models, have a longer manufacturer warranty on the motor than on other parts. If yours is still covered, contact the manufacturer first. Once the coverage ends, we're happy to take over.

Washer from another brand? Call with the model number from the sticker inside the door opening or on the back panel and we'll tell you right away if we can fix it.
